When is the best time for yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

The best time for yoga teacher training in Rishikesh is October to November and February to March, when days are mild, mornings are cool and the sky is usually clear. These months make the 6 AM practice comfortable and leave the afternoons pleasant for study.

That said, there is no bad month to train, only different trade-offs. December and January are quiet but cold at dawn, April is warm, May and June are hot, and July to September brings the monsoon along with the lowest prices and the smallest crowds. The right month depends on what matters most to you: weather, cost, how busy the town is, or simply when you can take time off.

What is the weather in Rishikesh month by month?

Rishikesh has three broad seasons: a mild winter from October to March, a hot summer from April to June, and the monsoon from July to September. The table shows what each month feels like for a yoga student.

For travel details by season, including what to pack and how to get there, see our guide to yoga in Rishikesh.

They combine the most comfortable weather with clear skies and a lively but not crowded town. Mornings are cool enough for a long Hatha class and warm enough that you do not need three layers to sit for pranayama.

  • October and November follow the monsoon, so the hills are still green and the air is clean. This is peak season for international students, and courses fill earlier.
  • February and March bring spring. In March, Parmarth Niketan hosts the International Yoga Festival, which draws teachers and students from around the world. It is a good time to be in town if you want to attend talks and classes after your course.

The catch is demand. If you want one of these months, apply two to three months ahead, particularly for single or double rooms.

Is it good to do yoga teacher training in winter (December and January)?

Yes, if you can handle cold mornings. Winter is one of the quietest and most focused times to train, with sunny days and very few distractions, but dawn temperatures close to 5°C make the first hour of the day demanding.

Practise in layers: a fleece and warm socks for pranayama and meditation, then take them off as the Hatha class warms you up. Most buildings in Rishikesh are not heated, so a warm sleeping layer helps too. In return, the sunny winter afternoons are among the most pleasant of the year for study and rest.

Is summer a good time for yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

Summer works well if you want a lower fee and do not mind heat. From May to June, afternoons often go above 35°C, so schools practise in the cooler early morning and evening and rest through the middle of the day.

The fee difference is real. On our 200 hour yoga teacher training, batches from May to August cost less for private and shared rooms:

RoomRegular feeMay – August fee
Private room€1,480€1,290
2-sharing room€1,280€1,090
3-sharing room€1,150€990
4-sharing room€795€795

Every fee includes the training, accommodation for the full 23 days and three sattvic vegetarian meals a day. Air conditioning is extra from May until August, at 100 EUR per room per stay, which many summer students find worthwhile.

Should you do yoga teacher training during the monsoon?

The monsoon, from July to September, suits students who want a quiet town, green surroundings and lower costs, and who mostly plan to stay on campus. It is the least crowded time of year.

The trade-offs are rain and travel. Heavy showers are common, the Ganga runs high and fast, river rafting is closed, and landslides can block hill roads, so day trips into the mountains are unreliable. Classes continue as normal indoors. If you choose the monsoon, pack a rain jacket and quick-drying clothes, keep a spare day in your travel plans, and never swim in the river.

How does the season change a day of yoga teacher training?

The timetable stays the same all year, but the season changes how the day feels. Classes run from 6:00 AM to about 8:30 PM in every month; what changes is the temperature at dawn, the heat at midday and whether you spend free time outdoors.

  • October to March: cool, sometimes cold, 6 AM sessions; comfortable mid-day classes; free afternoons in the sun by the river or in town.
  • April to June: the early morning and evening are the pleasant parts of the day. The long lunch and rest break from 1:30 to 3:00 PM becomes a real siesta, and rooms with air conditioning are worth the extra cost.
  • July to September: warm, humid and wet. Most of the day happens indoors, which some students find helps them focus on study.

Whatever the season, the morning shatkarma and pranayama session sets the tone. Our guides to pranayama for beginners and Shatkarma explain what happens in that first hour.

What should you pack for each season in Rishikesh?

Pack loose cotton clothes that cover your shoulders and knees in every season, then add what the weather needs. The table lists the extras.

SeasonAdd to your bag
October – NovemberA light fleece for early mornings and evenings
December – JanuaryA warm fleece or down jacket, warm socks, a shawl for meditation, a warm sleeping layer
February – MarchA light fleece; sunscreen for the afternoons
April – JuneLight, breathable clothes, a sun hat, sunscreen, a refillable water bottle
July – SeptemberA rain jacket, quick-drying clothes, sandals that cope with wet ground, mosquito repellent

Our Rishikesh packing list covers clothes, practice gear, health items and documents in full.

How does the season affect travel to Rishikesh?

Most international students fly into Delhi and then take a one-hour domestic flight to Dehradun, about 20 km from Rishikesh, or a train to Haridwar. Travel is easiest from October to March.

In the monsoon, flights and trains can run late and hill roads beyond Rishikesh may close after heavy rain, so arrive a day early and keep your onward plans flexible. In May and June, Indian school holidays fill trains and flights, so book early. Around Diwali, in October or November, domestic transport is also busy. Wherever you travel from, give yourself one night to recover from the long journey before a 6 AM start.

When do yoga teacher training courses start in Rishikesh?

Most schools run their main courses every month, with longer and specialist courses on fixed dates through the year. At Triguna the schedule is:

CourseLengthWhen it runs
100 Hour YTTC12 days2nd to 14th of every month
200 Hour YTTC23 days2nd to 24th of every month
300 Hour YTTC2nd to 27thMarch, April, July, September, October and November
Meditation Teacher Training12 days13–24 September, 2–13 November, 13–24 February, 2–13 April
Yoga Retreat7 or 10 daysFrom the 2nd of the month

Because the 200 hour course runs every month, you can pick your season first and then the batch. The 300 hour and meditation courses are the ones to plan around.

Which month suits each Triguna course?

The 100 and 200 hour courses run every month, so choose them by season. The 300 hour and meditation courses run on fixed dates, so they decide the month for you.

  • 100 hour yoga teacher training (12 days, 2nd to 14th): any month works. October to March is the most comfortable; a summer batch is a short, affordable first step if you can handle the heat.
  • 200 hour yoga teacher training (23 days, 2nd to 24th): October, November, February and March for the weather; May to August for the lower fee; December and January for the quietest town.
  • 300 hour yoga teacher training (2nd to 27th): March, April, July, September, October or November. March, October and November give the best weather of the six.
  • Meditation teacher training (12 days): September, November, February or April. The November and February dates fall in the most comfortable weather.
  • Yoga retreat (7 or 10 days): any month, starting on the 2nd. A good way to test the town and the routine before a longer course.

What is the best season to combine training with travel?

October to March is the best season if you want to add sightseeing before or after your course, because the roads are open and the mornings are clear. In the monsoon, river rafting closes and mountain roads can be blocked, so keep plans close to town.

A few easy trips from Rishikesh, all possible on a free day or in the days after your course:

  • Kunjapuri Devi Temple: a hilltop temple about 25 km away, best at sunrise for views of the snow peaks on a clear winter morning.
  • Vashishtha Gufa: a quiet meditation cave on the Ganga about 25 km upstream.
  • Shivpuri: the starting point for white-water rafting, about 16 km upstream; closed in the monsoon.
  • Rajaji National Park: elephants, deer and birds, with safaris from the Haridwar and Chilla sides.
  • Neelkanth Mahadev Temple: a Shiva temple in the forest, about 32 km by road.
  • Haridwar: the holy city 25 km south, famous for its evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri.

Plan these for the days after your course rather than before it. You will arrive fresher for day one, and the trips feel different once you have three weeks of practice behind you. Our guide to places to visit in Rishikesh has photos and more detail.

How do you choose the right month for you?

Choose by your top priority first, then check the season. These steps make the decision quick.

  1. Decide what matters most: weather, cost, a quiet town, or fitting your work and family calendar.
  2. For the best weather, pick October, November, February or March.
  3. For the lowest fee, pick a 200 hour batch from May to August.
  4. For the quietest town, pick December, January or the monsoon months.
  5. Check the course calendar if you want the 300 hour or meditation training, since they run only in certain months.
  6. Add travel time. Arrive a day early to recover from the journey, and allow two or three extra days if you want to see Rishikesh.
  7. Apply early for peak months, two to three months ahead.

What should you plan around Indian festivals and holidays?

Festivals make Rishikesh more colourful and busier. They do not stop classes, but they affect travel and the town's atmosphere, so it helps to know they are coming.

  • March: the International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan, and usually Holi, the festival of colours.
  • October or November: Diwali, the festival of lights. Its date moves each year with the lunar calendar, and trains and flights within India fill up around it.
  • May and June: Indian school holidays bring many domestic visitors to Rishikesh and the mountain towns beyond it.
  • Every evening, all year: the Ganga Aarti at the riverside ghats, an easy outing on your free time.

Book flights and trains early if your dates fall near Diwali or the summer holidays.

How far in advance should you book yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

Book two to three months ahead for October, November, February and March, and four to six weeks ahead for other months. That leaves time for your e-visa, flights and preparation.

Use the time well. Our 8-week preparation plan takes you from booking to arrival, and starting a short daily breathing practice with our pranayama for beginners guide makes the 6 AM sessions much easier. It also helps to know what to expect from the morning cleansing practices, which we explain in what is Shatkarma, and how the two daily asana styles compare in Hatha vs Ashtanga yoga.

These are also the busiest months, so apply two to three months ahead, especially if you want a single or double room.

Is Rishikesh too cold for yoga in December and January?

It is cold but manageable. Mornings and nights are often close to 5°C, while sunny days reach around 20°C. Bring a fleece, warm socks and a warm layer for sleeping, and practise early sessions in layers. Many students like winter because the town is quiet and the afternoons are bright and pleasant.

Is it cheaper to do yoga teacher training in Rishikesh in summer?

Yes, at many schools. On the Triguna 200 hour course, batches from May to August cost €1,290 instead of €1,480 for a private room, €1,090 instead of €1,280 for a 2-sharing room and €990 instead of €1,150 for a 3-sharing room. The 4-sharing room is €795 all year. The trade-off is afternoon heat above 35°C.
